Avoid Public Wi-Fi
As tempting as it is to constantly save data and connect to public Wi-fi, connecting to Wi-Fi is always a huge cyber security risk. This threat is equally as prevalent (if not more so) while on holiday. These threats mean that your data could be seen and stolen. The best way to avoid this is to invest in data. If you must connect to hotel Wi-Fi, you may want to ask your hotel about their network safety measures. Especially if you have to access sensitive data, and are travelling for business. This means the option to auto-connect to Wi-Fi should definitely be switched off. You may also want to consider using a VPN.
As for airport Wi-Fi : don’t even think about it.
Update Passwords And Software
If you aren’t already updating your passwords once in a while, now might be the right time. In fact, it might be a good idea to make it a habit. Updating passwords is a basic cyber security measure that many people over look.
Out of date software is one of the most common ways malware finds its way onto devices. This should be a practice even if you are simply sitting on your sofa, but if travel is what inspires you to finally act on it, so be it.
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Following the idea of having secure passwords, MFA is a great idea which should be applied regardless of whether you are travelling or not. Think of of it as an extra lock on your devices. Why have one when you can have more? It will also be of great use if you are unfortunate enough to misplace or have a device stolen.
BeCareful Where You Charge
Especially if you plan on charging via USB ports. Charging on a public USB port may lead to your device being infected with malware. Don’t take the risk.
